twice as nice

I don't think I ever expected holidays to be twice as nice once a second little girl joined our family. Granted,  Cecilia was with us last year as we celebrated Christmas and Easter, but now that she is older, walking and talking...everything is just that much better.

Easter was especially fun with the girls this year. It was the first year that Cece could actually participate in egg hunts, and she quickly became obsessed. Luckily we were able to participate in multiple egg hunts on Easter day. We kicked things off with our church service. I couldn't get over how sweet my girls looked in their Easter dresses. Strangely, Cece did not get the memo that there are usually quite a few photos taken on this day, because she was NOT in the mood to "smile pretty". That is pretty common these days. Although I can easily get Olivia to smile for the camera, the odds of getting them both to look at the camera and smile are pretty slim lately.

After church it was time to dig into the Easter baskets. The girls didn't waste any time tearing into their goodies. Buying little trinkets for Olivia is a piece of cake right now. Cecilia, on the other hand is tough. Finding things that she will enjoy that will fit into a small Elmo basket is a bit challenging. I think I succeeded though. I grabbed a shot of the girls holding their favorite treasures from their Easter baskets. Cece's was her little stuffed Cookie Monster and Sesame Street figurines and Olivia's was her CD of songs from her favorite Disney shows. Seeing their little faces light up is all I need to know that I helped to make it a memorable Easter for them.

Each year we share Easter dinner with our dear friends, The Forte's. I have known them since I was a child and they have been inviting us to share the holiday with them for at least 6 years now. They treat our girls like their own grand kids, and make the holiday so special for them. Each year, right after dinner we head outside for the annual Easter egg hunt. This year Cece could hunt for her own eggs. Olivia needed no assistance finding her eggs, but Cece needed some guidance. With a little help from her big sis Cece found her hidden eggs in no time.

The girls had Easter baskets waiting for them as they came inside from their very successful egg hunt. If you are keeping track, this is basket number two for the day. Can we say blessed?

With two Easter baskets each, and one very successful egg hunt under their little belts, you would think that was enough to call it a day, but no...there was still more fun to be had! After our big Easter dinner we stopped at my Mom's on the way home for one last egg hunt, and of course more Easter baskets! Watching both of my girls enjoy their day full of searching for eggs and opening their treasures made for one joyful Easter. Like I said...holidays are twice as nice with two girls.

Earlier in March my Aunt Sue came for a visit. She left the beautiful California weather to come spend a week with her Great Nieces. We surprised Olivia by not telling her about the visit. My Mom took Olivia to the airport and told her they were just picking up a friend. She was completely shocked to see her Aunt Sue Sue walk off the plane, and completely thrilled! It was a fun week. Olivia hardly left Sue's side the entire week and Cece quickly grew attached to her as well. It's always sad to say good-bye to Aunt Sue Sue after a visit, but in a few short months the girls will get to spend more time with her when we make a visit to California. This will be Cece's first trip to California and Olivia's, ummmmm...I have lost track, but I want to say 7th!

The girls are both very busy with their daily activities right now. Olivia is close to wrapping up her final year in the primary classroom at her Montessori school. There are big changes coming her way next year as she moves into the lower elementary room. Her school work will be a much bigger focus in her daily routine. I can tell she is beginning to anticipate the changes that are on the horizon. One reassuring factor in this transition is that she will be moving up with many of her friends. That should help to make the move much easier for her. She has made some very special friends this year and had some pretty amazing experiences. Seeing this school year come to an end will be hard for all of us.

We are in the beginning stages of potty training at our house right now. It started off with a bang! We had lots of successes at first. I was even thinking I might be able to stop buying diapers much sooner than I anticipated.

Silly me...seems I jumped the gun on that one. After about 3 weeks of going on the potty on a pretty regular basis things came to an abrupt halt. Lady Cecilia proceeded to take a 2 1/2 hiatus from using the potty. Her dry spell ended this past weekend, but she still isn't using the potty on a regular basis quite yet. Hard to say when this girl will decide she is done with diapers, but something tells me that she is going to do it on her own time frame...not mine! Does this look like a girl that is going to do as I say?

On top of showing a slight interest in the potty Cece is changing in so many other ways. She communicates so well with us and is not the least bit shy when telling us what she wants or needs. I hear her use new words daily. She is similar to her sister in that way. Although she is not communicating as well as Olivia was at this age, her vocabulary is still very strong. She continues to be a massive show-off, a comedian and one very loving little girl!

The weather around here is warming up...slowly, but surely. We have been able to get outside on occasion, which makes the girls very happy. Olivia is working to learn to ride her bike. This task is proving to be more difficult than any of us ever imagined. I know my girl can do it, it just may take awhile. Cecilia has been taking on all sorts of new tasks lately. Last year at this time we were waiting for this firecracker to take her first steps. Now we are chasing her as she runs down the sidewalk as we play outside. She is a curious girl and that means all eyes must be on her at all times. I can tell already this Spring/Summer is going to be a blast with this little one. She just loves being, "ow-side".

I am looking forward to the many adventures we are sure to have this summer. I will try to be better about blogging more than once every two months. It's funny how shuffling two little girls here, there and everywhere leaves me with very little free time to do things like blog. Somehow, I still manage to find time to talk about my amazing girls!

those long winter months

Winters in Indiana seem to last an eternity. Cold, dreary days...stuck inside the house, trying to find fun activities to keep the kids occupied. As you can imagine, this can be quite challenging. Luckily the girls enjoy playing with one another, so they do a pretty good job at keeping each other occupied. We have managed to find some fun things to pass the long winter days.

We haven't had much in the way of snow, but last month enough fell for us to take the girls sledding...Cece's first time! After spending about 15 minutes getting them both bundled up in their outerwear, we headed to the hills on the golf course behind my mom's house. It was hard to judge Cece's reaction at first. She can be a hard one to read at times.

Her reaction quickly turned to excitement as she saw her sister and Daddy racing down the hill in the distance. She was excited to get her turn and slide down along side her sis. She loved it and took many turns. Her patience with sledding wore thin quickly and she decided she was "all done". Olivia and Daddy still had more sledding to do, so I headed in with Cece and we watched them from the window.

January had one big milestone in store for Cecilia...her first haircut. Our hairdresser April, has been cutting my hair since I was in middle school. She did my hair for my high school dances, my wedding and of course, cut Olivia's hair for the first time. So obviously she would be the one to give Cecilia her first trim!

The little baby doll handled her first hair cut like a pro. I have the iPad to thank for that primarily. All I know is that it kept her still and focused, making it a breeze for April to cut her hair. I remember dragging along our little mini-DVD player when Olivia got her first haircut. I was worried that she would completely freak out with this unfamiliar experience and I wanted to distract her as much as possible. DVD player then, iPad now...they both worked and made for a very pleasant experience!

Olivia has been a busy bee at school since starting the second half of the year. She has been working especially hard in Math and with spelling. She is a reading machine these days, and is rocking it with her geography. What tickles me the most is how much she loves school. She never complains about going and she is genuinely enthusiastic about everything she does. She is one happy girl...not to mention, pretty darn smart!

Just last month we got a taste of what it will be like have two kids involved in extracurricular activities. Cecilia started swim lessons. Before I know it, we will be shuffling two girls back and forth, across town to dance classes, swim and soccer lessons and anything else they decide to be interested in. Before things begin to get insanely busy we will enjoy Cecilia and her singular activity...swimming!

Not only is the girl absolutely adorable in a bathing suit, but she is a mad woman in the pool! Cece loves being in the water, so no dealing with any fears there. The hardest part is keeping a hold of her in the water. She has her own agenda in the pool and spends most of the time trying to squirm out of my arms. I think I am more exhausted than she is by the time the half hour class is over.

Olivia has her own thing going on this winter. She is passing the time with indoor soccer. Having played outdoors for the past few summers, she thought she would like to give indoor soccer a try. She is having a blast and it turns out she is pretty darn good too. This seems to be her sport, and she looks forward to going each weekend.

There is one bright spot to a long and dreary winter...Valentine's Day. This is probably one of Olivia's favorite holidays, aside from Christmas. We have a couple of Valentine's traditions that we try to stick to each year. The first is making heart-shaped pizzas. I think we have done this for 3 or 4 years now. Each year Olivia gets better and better with her pizza making skills.

Cecilia is still too young to be creating her own pizza, but she enjoyed watching and eating the final product. They were, of course very tasty and fun to make, as always.

We usually follow up our heart-shaped pizzas with heart-shaped pancakes the following morning. It is fun to make these things for the girls. It makes the holiday special for them and gives them something to look forward to each year. Soon Cecilia will be looking forward to our heart-shaped food the same way Olviia does each Valentine's Day.

February is coming to a close and Spring is right around the corner. I am itching for it to warm up so I can get these girls outside. Cecilia is one big ball of energy and I think it would do us all some good if she could burn some of that up running around outdoors. Her crazy outbursts have become less frequent. She still gets upset every time she cannot communicate what she needs, but she seems to be getting better at managing her feelings.

She is putting together some of her words now. Watching her vocabulary grow is so fascinating. There is nothing like hearing her say a new word for the first time. She is a fireball and she keeps us on our toes at all times. No matter how challenging she can be at times, it is hard not to love a face like this all of the time!

Having my two cuties around during the cold winter months sure helps to pass the time quickly. I can only imagine the fun we will have together this summer!

merry, merry

Oh, Christmas! Hands down our favorite holiday in this house. We started celebrating the holidays as soon as Thanksgiving was over. We packed in as many Christmas themed activities as humanly possible. With Christmas just a few short days away there was still more fun to be had.

Every year we celebrate Christmas with our close friends, The Wilhelms. I have known Korrie my entire life. Her Mom is my Mom's best friend. Her oldest son is my God son and Korrie and her husband Tom are Olivia's God parents. Got all that? We are close and our families have our own little Christmas celebration each year.

We always exchange presents and this year the girls got the most adorable matching gifts. Korrie got them Minnie Mouse jammies and each their own Mickey and Minnie. There were lots of snuggling going on with their new loveys.

We had a jammed packed day planned for Christmas Eve. A wrench was thrown into our plans when Todd woke up feeling very ill. The aches and chills were a sure sign that he was not and should not go anywhere that day. He climbed back into bed as I got the girls ready for the first of many Christmas Eve activities. First stop was our Christmas at his brother's. His brother Barry and his family are usually gone on Christmas so we celebrate with them the day before.

Olivia always looks forward to spending time with her one and only girl cousin, Ella. It took a few years, but they are now at the age where they play perfectly together. Originally it was just the two girls amongst many boy cousins. But now when we get together as a family the three girl cousins do their own thing in their little "girls club". Cecilia may be too young to be a part of their play right now, but she simply wants to be a part of everything they do. The great thing is that the girls are more than happy to include Cece in their activities. I would have never imagined that after 8 boy grand kids this family would be blessed with 3 granddaughters in a row. It could not have worked out more perfectly, as these three are growing up to be very close.

We hoped that by the time we got home from Todd's brother's that he would be feeling better. Well, in fact he was worse which meant that I would be going to Christmas Eve service at church alone. I did at least think my Mother, Grandma and Uncle would be joining me which meant I would have help with the girls, but just as I was about to walk out the door my Mom called saying she had suddenly become ill. So...it was off to church alone with the girls. Getting them dress and ready by myself was a bit of a challenge, but they were both very well behaved and did great through the Children's service.

After church it was off to the Wilhelm's annual Christmas Eve party. The only difference this year was that it was just me and the girls. We still had a nice time and made sure to make it home in plenty of time to put cookies out for Santa. Cecilia was exhausted from the day's activities, but Olivia was itching with excitement knowing that within hours Santa would be swinging by the house to hopefully leave the gifts she so desperately wanted. Needless to say, both girls went to sleep with very little persuading that night. Once the girls were resting soundly in their beds Santa (AKA...Mommy), got to work to make sure things were all set for the morning.

One thing I love about my girls is that they LOVE their sleep. There is no waking up at the crack of dawn to open presents. They wake up when they have gotten enough sleep and Olivia is always sure to come find us before heading down stairs. Todd woke up on Christmas morning feeling much better...thanks goodness! Once we were all up, we made our way down stairs to see what Santa had left behind. The look on Olivia's face shows just how excited she was that morning.

We had a nice relaxing morning at home opening presents and just taking in the wonderfulness of Christmas Day. Since my Mom was ill the day before we had no idea if we would be spending the day with her, like we do most years. The girls took their time opening their gifts and we soaked in every second of them enjoying Christmas morning.

By late morning my Mom called saying she felt much better. Her (less than) 24 hour "bug" seemed to have passed, which meant that we could get on with Christmas Day as planned. As if the girls hadn't already received enough presents at home they were about to get showered with even more gifts from their Nana.

The highlight of the morning was watching Cece with her new baby doll and baby bed, made with love by our family friend, Dennis. She may have initially thought the bed was meant for her, as she climbed right in and got cozy. I think it is pretty obvious what present was Cecilia's favorite on Christmas Day!

We finished the day at Todd's Mom's, with even more presents. By that evening we were simply exhausted. But even with all of the last minute sicknesses the Menors still managed to have a wonderful family Christmas. The entire holiday season was a blast for us and I was sad to see it come to an end. Between the visits to Santa, driving around looking at lights, spending time with family...the best part was seeing the joy in my girl's eyes as they created many Christmas memories together.

Within days of Christmas Cecilia turned 18 months old. I can hardly believe how much our little baby has grown. She is changing everyday and also making an early entrance into her "terrible twos". My Mom keeps telling me that her mini fits are her way of "finding herself" and "asserting her independence". I am just hoping that it is a phase that ends quickly. Even when throwing her fits she is still pretty cute. This may sound terrible, but right now she is the sweetest when sleeping.

Lately she walks around saying, "Mama! Doing?" That is her incredibly cute way of asking me what I am doing. She doesn't ask just once. She asks over, and over and over again. One could say she is a nosey little thing. She has many words so I can usually figure out what she needs or wants. Sometime her version of a particular word is not what one would expect. For example, instead of asking for a banana, or saying "nana" like most babies, she has chosen to say, "mia". I have no idea where that word came from. It sounds nothing like banana, but as far as she is concerned she is asking for a banana. She may be working on her communication skills and figuring out who she is right now, but she is still as cute as a button. So I will put up with the crazy behavior for the time being.
