Grandpa...You Will Be Missed

With all of the fun and exciting news surrounding the baby, we were faced with some sad news this weekend. My Grandpa...George Sculley, passed away. He had been suffering from a form of lung cancer and he ended his fight on Friday evening. In all actuality it was a blessing. From the time he found out he had cancer he chose not to fight it. At his age it would not have done him much good, and the treatment would have only made his final days miserable. Instead he chose to live out the last months of his life in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by those he loved, and the ones that loved him.

He was never in any pain and that makes all of this so much easier for everyone. Right up until the end he still had his sense of humor and that twinkle in his eye when he would speak to anyone in his family. Todd and I had chance to see Grandpa a few months ago. He was still doing pretty well then, but was definitely weak and not the same upbeat Grandpa I had always known. But most importantly he had the chance to see me pregnant. He was fascinated by it and he called it "My Pointy Belly!" He just thought it was the neatest thing. From day one and right up until the end he would always tell me that he was convinced we were having a girl.

I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him once last time...last week. And although he was not able to say much more than whisper...I love you...I knew what he was thinking. I told him how much we all loved him and how much the baby loved him also. I told him that we would make sure that the baby knew all about his Great Grandpa George. If I could have asked for one more thing it would have been for Grandpa to have had the chance to meet his great grandchild. But knowing that Grandpa is now in a much better place, gives us all peace. I am grateful for the time I had with him and for the chance to have him walk me down the aisle when I was married.

He had a long and fulfilling life. He had an amazing family. You really cannot ask for more than that! And although he will be missed tremendously...he will always be loved!

If there was one last thing I could say to my Grandpa, that I know would bring a smile to his face, I would tell him...

"Grandpa...I kinda like ya!"

Your grandpa was one of a kind! We only met him a few times, but George and Cleo hold a special place in our hearts. He will be missed, but his wonderful sense of humor, and his love for his family will live on forever.

We will miss "Grandpa" George...what a wonderfully gentle man who always made me feel like a good mother to his Great God Grand Child, Hayden. Kim's right, Christmas Eve will be very different this year. We've had a lot of loss but aslo a lot of gain. Three new babies in one year. How awesome. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and Todd and your little miracle, as well as your Mom, Aunts and Uncles and of course, "Grandma". Take care plastic sista.
Talk with you soon!
Love,
Korrie

Jess,
I have had the great priviledge of knowing your Grandpa George since I was in high school (a very long time ago), and visited him and held his hand the day before he passed away. One thing that I know for sure is that he loved his family with all his heart and was very proud of each and every one. I, too, wish that he could have seen your blessed baby, but I am as certain as I can be that he will be smiling down on you from above. With love, Jan Wills (Granny Judy's high school buddy and college roomie)

A sad week with a wonderfully happy ending. George will be sadly missed, but Olivia will be much loved by Great Grandma Cleo. George looked very much like my father in law,(Eric) and I recall about 27 or so years ago, he saw my twin girls (Kim and Korrie - Jessicas virtual sisters) in their beds. They both looked up and said "Grandpa". George just picked them up and hugged them just like he was Grandpa. George loved his kids, and grandkids and it is too sad that he could not have met Olivia.
George we will miss you over the holidays but know you are in a better place

It may take until Christmas to get get Judy down off here "Granny" high.

Congratulations on the baby girl!! I'm glad you were able to make it to the funeral and we were able to see your belly. Couldn't have timed the birth any better. I hope you three are doing well...don't forget to send pictures!!

Love,
Kay

Grandpa George was very smart, and we all should have known that this baby was a girl. We all loved George and we will miss him! I'm sure that Olivia will inherit his wonderful spirit and gentle nature.

Nothing can fill the void of losing someone that we love, but Olivia arrived at a perfect time to bring a blessing to the family and remind us all of the splendor of life!

I can't wait to meet my little Great-niece who I'm already totally in love with! Make sure that Great Auntie Sue gets her snuggles in at Thanksgiving, because once I can cuddle with my grand-niece I'll be very unwilling to share her!!!

Grandpa Georgie. One thing about grandpa that everyone knew is that he loved to tell stories and tell them over and over again, everytime you saw him. The story he used to tell me that I loved the most was the one when him and grandma came down to florida when I was a little kid and they drove me up to Michigan. We stopped at a restaurant to eat and grandpa knocked over his soda and when the waitress came over he pointed at a me. I must have been around 2 or 3. Everytime he would tell me that story he would just start laughing. I also remember sitting on his lap and him telling me stories that he would just make up on the spot. I watch my father do that with Nia and it just brings me back to those days. One advise I would give you two with your daughter is to just tell her stories whether you make a story up or true stories, cause it will really open up her imagination. Congradulations to the both of you and to Todd the days of being a mans man are probably over. Take care

I am incredibly sorry for your loss - for lack of something more profound to say. He would tell us every Christmas how beautiful our Trevor was and how he enjoyed seeing him grow. It breaks my heart that he didn't get to see your beautiful daughter. I know how much it hurts me that my Grandpa didn't get to meet Trevor. It haunts me even now and it is eleven years later. Keep your chin up.
Sincerely,
John Gilbert
